Workshop on “Educational Development and Quality” at Advanced Manufacturing Institute

A workshop titled “Educational Development and Quality” organized by Institute of Scientific Research and Development was held on 17th January 2019 at Advanced Manufacturing Institute, King Saud University.

The workshop began with an introductory speech by AMI’s supervisor Dr. Hisham Alkhalefah. He Highlighted key roles of Advanced Manufacturing Institute in Research, Development, Consultancy and Training. He also introduced some innovative product designs developed by AMI Researchers.

Dr. Bashir Salah (Vice president of the technical affairs) reviewed the execution plan for the second strategic phase of the institute. Following this Vice Dean for Scientific Research and Development Dr. Mohammed Saad Al-Qahtani emphasized the need for strengthening the links between local industries and academia through joint projects that utilize facilities and skills at both ends and give robust solutions to real world problems.

The Dean of Development and Quality Dr. Abu Al-Nasr Mustafa gave an introductory lecture about strategic planning and explained in detail the execution procedures. Mr. Turki Al-Yami presented an interesting lecture regarding Continuous Improvement (Kaizen Methodology) and gave some implementation examples from daily life and manufacturing Industries.

The Workshop was concluded with a draw on “Cultural Competition Awards” for the Institute’s Students.

 

 

 

Recommendations of Digital Manufacturing in Spare Parts Industry Workshop

Under the auspices of KSU Rector Prof. Dr. Badran Bin Abdulrahman Advanced Manufacturing Institute organized workshop on Digital manufacturing in spare parts industry in Al Bahu – Dir'iya hall on Tuesday 7 Muharam 1437 H.

the workshop has opened by His Excellency the Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Abdullah Salman on behalf of the Rector, Prof  Ahmed Al-Aameri Vice Rector for Graduate Studies & Scientific Research and the participation of the armed forces and the General Organization for Water Desalination and company Caliph Holding and a number of specialists in the field of digital manufacturing and the presence of a large number of representatives from government and private agencies concerned, as well as a number of academics.

The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran , then threw a professor Abdulrahman Ahmari Dean of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute speech in which he welcomed the attendees and explained the objective of the workshop and the main its topics and the role played by modern digital manufacturing in the manufacture of spare parts. Then threw Prof. Dr. Abdullah Salman Vice Rector speech in which he emphasized the role of the university in the community partnership and the fruitful cooperation with the various productive sectors to contribute to build a knowledge society. He also stressed the role played by the sector in the field of domestic manufacturing of spare parts and the need for the expansion of local manufacturing and encouraging the trend because of its direct impact on development. It also urged the two communities to exchange views and study the options for achieving the objectives of the workshop and access to recommendations can be made.

Then lectures of the workshop which consists of six lectures and a panel discussion began. In the first lecture, Prof. Dr. Abdulrahman Al Ahmari introduced the principles of direct digital manufacturing and its importance and the advantages and disadvantages of digital manufacturing. Also he displayed a description of materials and techniques and applications of direct digital manufacturing, especially in the field of spare parts industry. In the second lecture, Dr. Chi Kai introduced three-dimensional printing applications in the spare parts industry and he displayed a number of examples and techniques that have been successful in this area.

In the fourth lecture, Professor Said Darwish AMI vice Dean for Technical Affairs gave a presentation on how to apply digital manufacturing stages on real projects and how to draw the digital integration of reverse engineering and design computer models in the digital manufacturing chain. Also he gave a description of the techniques for digital manufacturing in the Advanced Manufacturing Institute at the university. In the fifth lecture, Dr. Hisham al-Khalifa, al-Khalifa Holding Company discussed the most important obstacles and challenges that limit the development of spare parts industry locally. In the sixth lecture, Engineer Ahmed Alnkhli displayed the experiences of Saline Water Conversion Corporation in the field of spare parts indicating enterprise projects and investment opportunities in this area and the classification system of spare parts in the organization and methods used for the resettlement of spare parts industry. After that a panel discussion on the future of direct digital manufacturing in the spare parts industry locally is done. One of the main recommendations of the workshop to emphasize the importance of taking advantage of direct digital manufacturing techniques in the re-design and manufacture of spare parts, as well as the importance of partnership and coordination among research institutions in universities and manufacturers and consumers sectors for spare parts to achieve the appropriate options for manufacturing. It was also stressed to take advantage of the successful experiences achieved by some sectors and dissemination their methodologies and intensifying efforts to transfer knowledge and technical for equipment for strategic products owned by large sectors in the Kingdom finally, the participants stressed the importance of a plan and executive programs for local manufacture of spare parts.
